The Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM) has an internationally acclaimed collection of work by the 20th-century avant-gardes, a period otherwise underrepresented in Spanish collections.
Building on a body of work bequeathed by sculptor Julio González (1876–1942), the collection encompasses the key movements and personalities from a crucial time in European art. From groundbreaking pieces by Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp to notable examples of Futurism, Constructivism and the Russian avant-garde.
The exhibition Building New Worlds, 1914–1945: The Historical Avant-Gardes in the IVAM Collection is divided into three main areas. First, a set of poetic, dreamlike creations with close ties to the Dadaist and Surrealist movements delves into the world of fantasy, dreams and the unconscious. Second, a series of analytical pieces experiments with form and explores the field of abstraction. Third, a range of works reflecting committed art, social critique and political propaganda rails against injustice and war.
This central core is enriched with pieces from the Alfaro Hofmann Collection—unique in the world in the field of industrial design—that underscore the value of objects as symbols of progress, freedom and development.
