Montmartre was not just the backdrop for work by the multi-talented Toulouse-Lautrec, but also the driving social and cultural force that shaped his modern style and bohemian nature.
Through paintings, drawings, posters and illustrations, “The Spirit Montmartre in the Time of Toulouse-Lautrec” shows the artist's works alongside his contemporary artists in fin-de-siècle Paris.
The streets, the cabarets and the cafés in the Montmartre neighbourhood were home to an enormous creative explosion, with a notable bohemian and avant-garde flair, brought about by young artists and intellectuals who challenged the status quo. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (Albi, 1864 - Château Malromé, 1901) and other artists from the period contributed towards the emergence of a ground-breaking movement, on the margins of the bourgeoisie, which celebrated art in public spaces that people could access.
The exhibition, which features over 300 works, including pieces on loan from international private and public collections, takes visitors on a journey through bohemian Paris at the turn of the century. The aim of this interdisciplinary selection of pieces is to help viewers get a picture of the fundamental role that the spirit of Montmartre played in the development of modern art and how Toulouse-Lautrec and his contemporaries influenced the development of the production of ephemeral art: posters, illustrations, prints and designs, which brought the bohemian spirit and artistic creations to new audiences.
